William H. Skinner, who later captained his own ship, kept this log when he served as First Mate on the whaling ship Mariner. The ship departed Nantucket on September 17, 1836 heading for the Pacific Ocean and returned on June 20, 1840, where it "...came to an anchor in 7 fathoms of water at Nantucket bar.” The log was digitized with the permission of James W. Male, descendant of William Skinner and Professor of Engineering at the University of Portland.
