History
From 1902-1934, the University student publication was a monthly magazine published as The Columbiad. In 1934, The Columbiad became a weekly broad-sheet and was renamed The Beacon when the name of the University was changed from Columbia University to the University of Portland. From 1935-2016, The Beacon newspaper remained a weekly print publication until 2016 when it moved to a digital format. Today, The Beacon is an online campus news source that continues to be published by dedicated student journalists at the University of Portland.
Acknowledgment
The student newspaper digitization project was made possible with support from the Oregon Heritage Commission, Heritage and Community Programs, Oregon Parks and Recreation Department.
