Originally called West Hall, Waldschmidt Hall was built in 1891 for Portland University, the Methodist institution that owned the first college on the Bluff. That school closed a few years later, and West Hall and the surrounding property were purchased for Columbia University in 1901 (renamed University of Portland in 1935). Cornerstone dedication: August 24, 1891.

Fun Fact

  • In the early years of the University, since it was the only building on campus, it served as student dormitory, dining hall, classrooms, and administrative offices.
  • A complete remodel and restoration took place in 1992 and was renamed Waldschmidt Hall in honor of the University's 15th president, Bishop Paul Waldschmidt, CSC.
